Objetivos: Avaliar os efeitos do treino dos músculos inspiratórios (TMI) na função pulmonar, na capacidade de exercício e na pressão inspiratória máxima (PImax) em fumadores e ex-fumadores com doença pulmonar obstrutiva crónica (DPOC). Metodologia: Esta revisão bibliográfica foi realizada de acordo com as diretrizes PRISMA. As bases de dados utilizadas incluíram PubMed, Web of Science e Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). Os critérios de inclusão foram estudos randomizados controlados envolvendo adultos (>18 anos) com DPOC que eram fumadores atuais ou antigos. Os artigos foram avaliados utilizando a escala de PEDro. Resultados: Dos 361 artigos identificados, 5 foram incluídos após a seleção. Os estudos mostraram que o TMI melhorou significativamente a PImax, a capacidade de caminhada de 6 minutos (6MWT) e a qualidade de vida (SGRQ). Conclusão: O TMI parece ser benéfico para os doentes com DPOC, incluindo os que têm antecedentes de tabagismo, melhorando significativamente a força muscular inspiratória, a capacidade de exercício e a qualidade de vida.
Objectives: To evaluate the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on lung function, exercise capacity and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) in smokers and ex-smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methodology: This literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The databases used included PubMed, Web of Science and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). The inclusion criteria were randomised controlled trials involving adults (>18 years) with COPD who were current or former smokers. The articles were assessed using the PEDro scale. Results: Of the 361 articles identified, 5 were included after selection. The studies showed that IMT significantly improved MIP, 6-minute walk time (6MWT) and quality of life (SGRQ). Conclusion: IMT appears to be beneficial for COPD patients, including those with a history of smoking, significantly improving inspiratory muscle strength, exercise capacity and quality of life.
