Visión de conjunto sobre la literatura puertorriqueña del siglo XX, en la que se señala hacia dos corrientes coexistentes que han marcado su fisonomía durante ese período. Una tiende a mirar hacia adentro, hacia las circunstancias del país, aunque utilizando el vocabulario estético contemporáneo. La otra tiende a mirar hacia fuera y, en general, ha tardado en ser aceptada como parte importante de esa literatura. Es esta última corriente alterna, sin embargo, con sus vínculos estrechos a movimientos sociales y estéticos de mayor universalidad, la que ha resultado –a la postre- de más impacto y la que le ha granjeado un mayor reconocimiento a esta literatura. This article projects a comprehensive vision of XXth Century Puerto Rican literature, emphasizing two separate tendencies which have characterized its development during that time. There has been, on the one hand, a tendency to look inwards, to concentrate on the problems and circumstances of the Island, although using the contemporary aesthetic idiom. Certain authors who have not been immediately recognized as important or representative, on the other hand, have connected with universal themes and modes. Somewhat paradoxically, these have achieved a wider recognition for Puerto Rican literature.
