Abstract(s)
Natural pigments have been, even more, a target of study due to their colorant properties and consequent benefit effects for health. In fact, the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries are trying to use natural pigments instead of the well-used synthetic ones, not only for their benefits but also in order to minimize the negative environmental impact that synthetic colorants may cause. Natural colorants take a huge importance for the pharmaceutical industry to be associated with diferent biological properties. Their beneficial effects are related to the ability of certain natural pigments present antioxidant properties, protection against oxidative damage to cellular components, anti-inflammatory effects and prevention of chronic non-transmitted diseases. This literature review work aims to characterize and describe the effects of natural pigments (chlorophylls, carotenoids, betalains and flavonoids) present in the plant kingdom, on their integration in the pharmaceutical industry.
