Abstract(s)
A obesidade é considerada a patologia do século XXI resultante de mudanças significativas nas sociedades desenvolvidas e em vias de desenvolvimento. A sua prevalência tem vindo a aumentar mundialmente e Portugal regista também números alarmantes de indivíduos portadores de excesso de peso e obesidade. A preocupação em reverter estes valores deve ser prioritária em idades precoces, pois a obesidade é mais fácil de reverter, nestas idades, do que quando diagnosticada em idades adultas, assim como tratar as morbilidades a ela associadas e que acarretam elevadíssimos custos para a saúde pública. Diversos têm sido os autores a debruçarem-se sobre esta problemática, procurando testar a eficácia de diferentes abordagens de tratamento junto de público alvo, no sentido de conhecer a realidade deste problema e intervir na tentativa de inverter esta tendência. Rever a temática da obesidade infantil, incluindo aspectos do seu diagnóstico, epidemiologia, fisiopatologia, prevenção e tratamento é o que se pretende na elaboração desta dissertação e perceber como Portugal se tem empenhado, em pareceria com os demais países, no combate a tão complexa patologia e cujas consequências acarretam vários prejuízos a nível físico, psicológico e social, para o individuo e consequências nefastas para a saúde pública.
Obesity is considered the pathology of the 21st century, resulting from significant changes in developed and developing countries. Its predominance has been increasing worldwide and Portugal also presents alarming rates of overweight and obese individuals. The main concern is to reverse these numbers at a younger age, because with prevention, the treatment of obesity is easier in these ages than in adults. The treatment of the morbidities associated to this disease is also more effective and it brings high costs to public health. Many authors approached this issue, searching to test the efficiency of different treatment approaches in a target audience in order to know the reality of the problem and act with the purpose of reversing this tendency. The purpose of this dissertation is to review the subject of child obesity, including its diagnosis aspects, epidemiology, pathophysiology, prevention and treatment. It's also aims to understand the effort of Portugal and other collaborating countries on this matter, in collaboration with other countries, how they fight this complex pathology, whose consequences may cause social, psychological or physical to the individual and disastrous consequences for the public health.
