Abstract(s)
Osteoarthritis is an osteoarticular disease that, as its name suggests, affects the bones and joints. This pathology is debilitating, since it is degenerative, progressive, complex, affects the articular cartilage, bone tissue and surrounding soft tissue, and may have a multifactorial origin. It affects people all over the world, but mostly individuals over the age of 60 years and female. Treatment can be pharmacological or non-pharmacological, with the main objective of reducing and controlling symptoms, as well as delaying the progression of the disease. The aim of this study was to identify the food supplements used for this pathology, which are sold in Portuguese pharmacies and parapharmacies, and compare them. The survey was conducted during the period from 1th October 2020 to 1th April 2021. Glucosamineglycans Glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid are borderline products, meaning they can be constituents of medicines such as food supplements. Thus, of the 33 food supplements under study, 31 are borderline products, due to the presence of these constituents. With this study it was concluded that the most recommended food supplements in Portugal for OA are Advancis® Jointrix Plus, Advancis® Jointrix SOS, Advancis® Jointrix Ultra, Aquilea Articulações, Aquilea Artriculações Forte, Arkoflex® Colagénio, Arkoflex® Condro-Aid, Arkoflex® Dolexpert+, Arkoflex® Expert Colagénio, Artrojam, Artronat® Flex, Artronat® Rapid, Artrozen®, BioActivo® Glucosamina Duplo, BioActivo® Glucosamina Xtra, Biokygen® Salto 3, Cartisil, Colagenius Active, Colagenius Vida Ativa, Condotril, Dobradix Move, Dobradix Rapid, Jointcare Mov Plus, MoviARTROSE tecnilor®, Structomax® and Therartril® MSM.
