Abstract(s)
Introduction: the presence of scoliosis may be a factor causing pulmonary dysfunctions. Objective: to analyze pulmonary function in relation with certain degrees of vertebral curvature in adolescents suffering from idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Methodology: a computerized search was performed in the Pubmed database and with other sources. Results: seven studies evaluating pulmonary function in 545 adolescents aged 10 to 20 years with IS were selected. Spine deformity was analyzed through the Cobb angle on radiographs and with the Adams test. Respiratory function was quantified by spirometry, by the cardiorespiratory response to exercise through the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and by the cycloergometer. Changes in the sagittal profile of the spine, rotation of the rib cage, or thoracic narrowing may have effects on respiratory mechanisms, impairment of thoracic complacency, and morphological alterations of the airways. Conclusion: the pulmonary function of adolescents suffering from idiopathic scoliosis is affected by the three-dimensional deformity of the vertebral column.
