Abstract(s)
The challenges of articulation between family life and professional life have emerged as a topic of study in different areas of knowledge, and they are countless, regardless of gender. However, when a woman decides to invest in a differentiated professional career path, while experiencing motherhood without the support of her child's father, the challenges not only become larger but more complex. Through a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive methodology, using the in-depth interview, the present study explores the trajectories of seven Brazilian women, between the ages of 35 and 55, who exercise or have already held management positions in different sectors of economic activity. Challenges are identified in reconciling family and professional responsibilities, as well as strategies designed and implemented to overcome expectations, pressures and obstacles built and imposed by society. The emergence of doubts resulting from the processes of constructing one's own identity, which reflect multiple and historical divergences in terms of gender, family and professional career, is also problematic. The results show signs of difficult paths for the permanence of social expectations - shared by the professional universe and, in some cases, by the women themselves - that claim a greater investment in the family area, albeit at the expense of damages in the fulfillment of their legitimate ambitions personal and professional. It is emphasized, therefore, the need to deepen the study around the compatibilization between family and professional life, from a gender perspective, exposing asymmetries and discriminations, in order to contribute to the conception and implementation of fairer and more balanced public policies.
