| dc.description.abstract | Os humanos partilham uma herança antiga com todos os demais mamíferos: a amamentação materna. No passado, representava uma forma peculiar de sobrevivência nos primeiros anos de vida, fornecendo ao lactente toda a energia necessária e protecção contra as infecções. Por outro lado, os mecanismos de crescimento mandibular sempre foram um tema intrigante para a comunidade ortodôntica por forma a poderem tratar com sucesso as más oclusões esqueléticas. Vários estudos foram conduzidos para exaltar o papel incalculável da amamentação materna durante o desenvolvimento da criança, contudo, apenas alguns forneceram dados que poderiam indicar um crescimento bem direcionado, quando comparado com outros métodos de aleitamento, e mais harmónico da mandíbula. Por meio da revisão bibliográfica desses estudos e de acordo com a actual corrente de pensamento das teorias de crescimento craniofacial, estudos experimentais, biomecânica da amamentação materna e do aleitamento por biberão, ajudar-nos-ão a clarificar melhor o assunto e a encorajar novos estudos. Humans share an ancient heritage with all other mammals: breastfeed. In the past, it represented a peculiar way of surviving during the first years of life, providing the offspring all the energy it needs and protection against infections. On the other hand, mandibular growth mechanisms have always been an intriguing topic for the orthodontic community in order to successfully treat skeletal malocclusions. Several studies have been conducted to extol the invaluable role of breastfeeding during the infant development, however, only a few have provided data that could indicate a better (when compared to other methods of lactation) and harmonic growth of the skeletal mandible. Performing a literature review of those studies and according to the current thinking of craniofacial growth theories, experimental studies, biomechanics of breast and bottle feeding, will help us to clarify the subject and to encourage a new studies. | por |
