Abstract(s)
This paper contemplates an analysis, whose bipartite nature is reflected in the organization of the document with two articles, on the relationship between the criminal records of male prisoners and their prison misconduct. It starts with a systematic review of the recent literature and an empirical study is followed. This one analyzes 68 condemned adult inmates of a Portuguese Prison Establishment. The literature review resulted in the analysis of 29 selected quantitative empirical articles. Mostly, the results show the study of a large multiplicity of criminal background indicators and inconsistent results among the studies. On the other hand, it shows a current interest in studying the relationship between the offender's past prison behavior and the same behavior in the current prison, as well as the relationship between the nature of the crimes committed in the past and the nature of the infractions committed in the current prison. The empirical study carried out later is of an exploratory nature. The results show statistically significant correlations between the number of prisons and the number of violent misconduct committed and between certain types of crimes committed in the past and certain types of misconduct committed in the current prison. They also suggest that prisoners that committed rule violations differ from those who did not as regards the average number of certain types of previous crime committed, including violent ones. Finally, the main contributions of this work are discussed and the implications of its limitations are explored.
