Abstract(s)
Language development is a determining factor in the development of various aspects of a child's life. The quality of early interactions can influence this process in a positive or negative way. Among several factors pointed out in the literature, family-related factors stand out. Objective: To describe the linguistic development of children aged around 24 months, in particular with regard to the number of words produced, a set of morphological and syntactic aspects, and the average length of utterances; and to verify the existence of associations between the linguistic performance parameters observed and risk factors related to the family: parental age, parental schooling, income, fratria, order in the fratria, and family history of communication/language/speech problems. Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study that includes correlational analysis. The convenience sample consisted of 54 parents of children between 23 and 25 months of age, from educational establishments in the north of the country. A sociodemographic and clinical characterization questionnaire and the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Phrases (16-30 months) were applied. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 29.0.2.0. All ethical issues were safeguarded. Results: In the language tasks, significant progress was seen at 24 months, this being an important milestone in language development. There was also an increase in lexical production and morphosyntactic aspects associated with the variables schooling and parental income. Conclusion: Around the age of 24 months, there is a significant increase in lexical and morphosyntactic development. Parental schooling and income seem to influence linguistic development, as seen in other studies. A larger sample will be needed to obtain more robust data.
