Abstract(s)
Objective: To find out whether cryotherapy is effective in normalizing muscle tonus in wrist flexors and increasing the functionality of the wrist of the spastic limb in individuals after a stroke. Methodology: Nine patients from the Fernando Pessoa Teaching Hospital, aged between 53 and 81, of both sexes, who had a stroke more than 6 months ago were randomly assigned into two groups: the Experimental Group (n=5) who underwent cryotherapy for 20 minutes after conventional physiotherapy and the Control Group (n=4) who underwent conventional physiotherapy. Both groups underwent 4 sessions. The degree of spasticity of wrist flexors was assessed using the Ashworth modified scale, as well as the range of motion of passive wrist flexion and extension. Results: After applying the protocol, it was found that cryotherapy had positive effects on increasing the range of motion of passive wrist flexion and extension, however this was not different between groups. There were no changes in spasticity. Conclusion: The results suggest that cryotherapy may be a good therapeutic modality for functional wrist activity, but without interfering with tonus modulation.
