| dc.description.abstract | O objetivo principal deste estudo pretendeu estabelecer a relação entre do arco dentário e a margem superior do lábio inferior, de acordo com o género e nacionalidade numa população jovem. Estudo descritivo observacional transversal, aprovado pela Comissão de Ética da UFP. Realizou-se a avaliação das características do arco dentário através de fotografias frontais em posição de sorriso natural, a existência de paralelismo entre o arco dentário superior e a margem superior do lábio inferior, traçando duas curvas, uma formada pela união dos bordos incisais dos dentes superiores anteriores e a outra formada pela margem superior do lábio inferior classificando-as como; paralela, reta ou inversa, com ajuda do software de processamento Adobe Photoshop© (Adobe Inc, San Jose, CA, USA). Análise de dados descritiva/inferência com comparações maioritariamente paramétricas (IBM SPSS Statistics vs. 29.0, p < 0,05). O estudo envolve 140 participantes, divididos por gênero e nacionalidade. A análise do arco do sorriso revelou que 92 participantes (65,7%) têm um arco paralelo, 35 (25%) um arco reto, e 13 (9,3%) um arco invertido. As mulheres tendem mais a ter arco paralelo, enquanto homens mostram maior variabilidade. A satisfação com o sorriso foi maior entre mulheres e portugueses, com 63 (45%) satisfeitos e 77 (55%) insatisfeitos, dos quais 26 (33,8%) desejam modificar a posição dos dentes. Os resultados deste estudo oferecem uma profunda visão sobre a influência da nacionalidade, gênero e desejo de alteração dentária na perceção e características do arco do sorriso entre os indivíduos. A análise dos dados de 140 participantes identificou padrões específicos e diferenças significativas que contribuem para a compreensão da estética do sorriso e variações demográficas. | dc.description.abstract | The primary objective of this study aimed to establish the relationship between the dental arch and the upper margin of the lower lip, according to gender and nationality in a young population. This descriptive observational cross-sectional study was approved by the UFP Ethics Committee. The evaluation of the dental arch characteristics was performed through frontal photographs in a natural smiling position, assessing the existence of parallelism between the upper dental arch and the upper margin of the lower lip. Two curves were traced, one formed by the union of the incisal edges of the upper anterior teeth and the other formed by the upper margin of the lower lip, classifying them as parallel, straight, or inverse, with the help of Adobe Photoshop© software (Adobe Inc, San Jose, CA, USA). Descriptive/inferential data analysis with mainly parametric comparisons (IBM SPSS Statistics vs. 29.0, p < 0.05). The study involved 140 participants, divided by gender and nationality. The smile arch analysis revealed that 92 participants (65.7%) have a parallel arch, 35 (25%) a straight arch, and 13 (9.3%) an inverse arch. Women tend to have a parallel arch more often, while men show greater variability. Satisfaction with the smile was higher among women and Portuguese participants, with 63 (45%) satisfied and 77 (55%) dissatisfied, of whom 26 (33.8%) wish to modify the position of their teeth. The results of this study offer profound insight into the influence of nationality, gender, and the desire for dental alteration on the perception and characteristics of the smile arch among individuals.
