Abstract(s)
A doença de Alzheimer é o tipo de demência com melhor caracterização e maior incidência de casos a nível mundial, a qual se estima que venha a multiplicar nos próximos anos devido ao envelhecimento populacional globalizado.
As estatinas são fármacos tradicionalmente utilizados para o tratamento da hipercolesterolemia e na prevenção das doenças cardiovasculares associadas à aterosclerose.
Mais tarde, as estatinas também começaram a ser vistas como retardadores da evolução de doenças neurodegenerativas. No entanto, recentemente principiaram a ser consideradas como fármacos potenciadores de degradação cognitiva. Existem estudos que defendem que o uso continuado de estatinas tem um efeito benéfico, protetor e preventivo no desenvolvimento desta patologia. Contudo, há artigos científicos que indicam que estes fármacos têm como principal efeito adverso ou colateral o desenvolvimento de défice cognitivo e amnésico.
Com a realização deste trabalho pretende-se efetuar uma revisão bibliográfica que tem como foco central o papel desempenhado pelas estatinas na doença de Alzheimer, com o objetivo de tentar esclarecer a controvérsia existente. Para tal efeito, procedeu-se à recolha de informação pertinente em artigos científicos de investigação e de revisão.
Alzheimer's disease is the best characterized type of dementia and has the highest incidence worldwide, which is estimated to multiply in the coming years due to globalized population ageing. Statins are drugs traditionally used to treat hypercholesterolemia and to prevent cardiovascular diseases associated with atherosclerosis. Later, statins also began to be seen as retarding the evolution of neurodegenerative disorders. However, they have recently begun to be considered as drugs that enhance cognitive degradation. There are studies that argue that the continued use of statins has a beneficial, protective and preventive effect on the development of this condition. Nevertheless, there are scientific articles indicating that these drugs have as main adverse or side effect the development of cognitive and amnesic deficit. With this work we intend to perform a literature review that has as its central focus the role played by statins in Alzheimer's disease, aiming to clarify the existing controversy. To this end, relevant information was collected in scientific research and review articles.
