Abstract(s)
Emotional Intelligence has been a growing focus of scientific interest. The present research is dedicated to its studying in the marital life of same-sex couples, explored through various dimensions, such as the couples' perception and understanding of their own emotions and the emotions of the person they share their lives with, their ability to express emotions correctly and to decode daily emotional expressions. It also investigates the application of these perceptions and expressions to deal with emotions, with the goal of managing complex situations that continuously arise in the marital context. More specifically, the empirical research aimed to analyse the potential relationship between different conflict management strategies and emotional intelligence in individuals involved in same-sex couples, a subject that still carries some originality and relevance within the Portuguese context. In a sample of 21 Portuguese participants, using a quantitative method, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Emotional Competence Questionnaire (ECQ), and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II) were applied to homosexual individuals, who were (or were not) involved in an intimate relationship at the time the research was conducted. In fact, studies on emotional intelligence and conflict management strategies in gay couples in Portugal are still virtually non-existent. With the results of this research, we aim to help better understand them in various contexts of psychological intervention.
