Within the field of Political Science, this research focuses on the decline of liberal democracies in Europe, particularly within the European Union, and the consequent resurgence of populism in the 21st century. Unlike in the past, the regression of contemporary democracies occurs through silent and legal means, carried out by elected governments that erode the system from within. Populism functions as a flexible ideology that divides society between the "pure people" and the "corrupt elites," gaining strength from economic and migratory crises that frustrate voters and weaken traditional political parties. In the field of Sociology, the study assesses how populist discourse manipulates emotions such as fear and anger, and how it spreads throughout the digital ecosystem. The project also highlights populist methods that rely on propaganda, fake news, censorship, and aggressive language. Finally, the study highlights the differences between the cases of Hungary and Italy as examples of populist rhetoric.
