Abstract(s)
The present dissertation, "The urban evolution of medium-sized cities in Portugal. Analysis | Times | 6 Cities," aims to analyze a set of medium-sized cities with relatively compact morphology to understand the different phases of their growth, urban transformations, and significant spaces, observing how each period contributed to their development. The parallel established among the six cities – Almeida, Castelo de Vide, Mértola, Óbidos, Sabugal, and Valença – seeks to gather and conclude on common aspects and dynamics of this evolution, which may be verified by future research on other medium-sized cities, thus contributing to a better understanding of the urban transformation process in Portugal. From a theoretical perspective, a set of parameters is discussed upon which the analysis of each case will later reflect, enabling a final comparative synthesis. The practical component is based particularly on cartographic analysis but also includes visits to some of the studied cities and corresponding photographic documentation that substantiates the conclusions. The study examines urban fabrics and layouts, the road network, and the forms of structures and organizing elements of the urban space, which are organized according to different scales (macro, meso, and micro, in certain cases, where a deeper level of detail is reached). Through the analysis, it will be possible to understand the transformations that have occurred over the years, as well as the extent to which elements supporting the identity and history of the cities have been preserved, while also adapting to contemporary needs. This will clarify the importance of certain urban values and the impact of altering these values on the construction of the present-day city. This study will also contribute to a reflection on the importance of valuing the historical and cultural heritage of cities, through understanding the different phases of urban evolution and the processes of transformation in Portuguese cities.
