Abstract(s)
Goals: To evaluate how the proportion of the size of anterosuperior teeth alters the perception of smile attractiveness by lay and MD dentists from different countries, age groups, specialty areas and by gender. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study, approved by the Ethics Committee of Fernando Pessoa University. From a symmetrical facial model (MFS) 6 images with different tooth proportions of the anterior sector were developed. Convenience sample with laymen and MD participants from France, Italy and Portugal, who completed an online questionnaire where they rated the self-perception of attractiveness of the 6 images (VAS scale: 0 (minimum) -10 (maximum)). Data analysis with non-parametric comparisons (IBM© SPSS® Statistics vs. 28.0), α=0.05. Results: The Portuguese (204 Layman/ 195MD), Italian (204 Laymen/ 210MD) and French (214 Laymen/ 199MD) participants. Significantly higher levels of attractiveness perceived by Laymen than MD were detected in France in the images with 70%, 75%, 85% and 90% proportions and in Portugal in the images with 70%, 80%, 85%, 90% and golden proportions. There was no significant difference between the MDs linked to the aesthetic area and the others. Significant gender differences were detected in Italian and Portuguese MDs. Older participants perceived greater attractiveness. Conclusions: All groups preferred the smile with the upper anterior teeth with golden proportion and considered the image with 70% tooth proportion as the least aesthetic smile. The area of practice of MDs did not influence perception, but gender, age and nationality are factors that influence aesthetic perception.
