Abstract(s)
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease lead to the progressive loss of neuronal functions and structures, affecting a large part of the world's population. Several factors are at the root of these diseases, one of the causes being an imbalance in metal homeostasis. The drugs currently used to treat these diseases have limitations. They essentially act as a symptomatic treatment and have various side effects. It is in this sense that the study of metal chelators as potential drugs in the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases has arisen. The aim of this work is to study the potential of metal chelators in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and to find out what research has already been done in this area. In order to carry out this work, bibliographical research of the studies on this subject was carried out, using search engines to search for scientific articles, books and websites. The interest in metal chelators in the treatment of neurogenerative diseases is relatively recent. The chelators presented in this work have obtained promising results in the various trials carried out but have some pharmacokinetic limitations and side effects. More studies and clinical trials will be needed to understand the applicability of chelators in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and to overcome their limitations.
