Abstract(s)
The aim of this review was to understand the impact of parenting styles on children's fear and anxiety at dental appointments. The aim was to answer the following question: Do family structure and parenting styles influence children's behavior at pediatric dentistry appointments? To prepare this bibliographic review, a search was carried out in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scielo and B-on directories between September 2023 and January 2024. The filters used were: articles published between 2010 and 2023, "free full text" and in Portuguese, English and French. The inclusion criteria were studies carried out on children up to the age of 18, articles that contained information that was decisive for the development of the theme of this thesis, focusing on parenting styles in children's behavior in pediatric dentistry consultations. The exclusion criteria were studies carried out on adults; articles referring to other behavior control techniques; studies carried out on children with specific needs. A total of 19 studies were considered which assessed the influence of parental anxiety and parenting styles on children's dental fear and anxiety. Parental style influences the child's temperament, anxiety and behavior in the dental consultation. Authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, marked by strict control or a lack of structure, can contribute to an increase in dental fear and anxiety. In contrast, authoritative parenting, characterized by affection, support and clear boundaries, is associated with lower levels of dental fear and anxiety. Parenting style and the interrelationship between parents and children should be meticulously considered when choosing appropriate behavior management techniques in the dental clinic.
