Abstract(s)
Much of the population practices sports. Practicing sports has many health benefits but like in any sport, practicing them can also bring some risks such as traumas or injuries. This risk varies according to the sport that practice and its intensity with which one practices. The sports that I choose to be part of this study were football, basketball, handball and rugby. These sports have some things in common, like for example they are a team sports game, where there’s a lot of contact between the players and due to this they can have trauma injuries. The goal of this study is to determine what are the causes of oro-facial trauma, what are the most common types of trauma, in what situations can we have a trauma situation, also I want to determine the prevalence of the use of mouthguards in the athletes that respond to my questions, and if this athletes are aware of the importance of oral health in sports, and if they have the knowledge of how to act when they suffer an injury. To make this study, I gathered a group of 213 athletes of four sports game (10 5 men and 108 womens) with ages between 15 and 43 years old. I asked them to answer some questions. 66,2% of the athletes, know that the oral health affects their performance, 66,8% doesn’t know how to treat the trauma injuries. 43,2% of them have suffered oro-facial traumas and 43,5 % of this athletes have confirmed that this type of injuries affected them and their performance, and 38% stopped practicing sports due to this type of trauma injuries. Most of the athletes (56,2%), the trauma injury occurred during competition and the main cause was the impact against other players. Football players (25%), handball players (74%), basketball players (31,4%) rugby players (41,1%) had oro-facial trauma. Most of the athletes don’t use mouthguards protection, except the rugby players (83,9% use mouthguard protection). In the others sports 5,8% and 14,8% use this type of protection.
