Abstract(s)
The literature proves that the mother’s breast milk can provide benefits to the premature baby, not only in the cognitive aspect as well as the physical aspect, enhancing further the link between mother and child. Despite the benefits, breastfeeding can also bring several hardships to the mother, most prominently the fear of being unable to breastfeed, the internment of the baby which makes it necessary to extract the milk to feed the baby indirectly, early weaning and lack of weight gain. Another important aspect which makes the breastfeeding process struggle is the lack of support given by healthcare professionals. Several studies report that there is a low success rate regarding breastfeed due to the lack of follow through and support after hospital discharge. The study has as a main objective to analise and get to know the experience that mothers go through during the breastfeeding process. To deepen the research, some detailed points were defined: understand the struggles felt by the mothers when breastfeeding premature babies as well as identify the role of nurses when it comes to helping the mothers that breastfeed these babies. This project consists in a literature review where there were selected tem studies, which met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Only studies that evaluated the experiences of mothers and their opinions about the process of breastfeeding their child were used, as well as the importance of the role of nurses and what they can do in order to help mothers improve their role in breastfeeding. As for the results, the selected studies showed that there are several difficulties in the breastfeeding process, of which the following stand out: the hospitalization of babies that causes difficulties in breastfeeding, the lack of bond between mother and child, and insufficient help from health professionals, especially in the period after discharge from the hospital and transition to the household. With this study, it was possible to deepen the knowledge about research, prematurity, breastfeeding and the importance of the role played by nurses in helping mothers who face the problem of having a premature baby.
