Abstract(s)
The present study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge of Dentists about the association/correlation of Periodontal Disease in Oncological Patients undergoing treatment, which can guide Medical-Dental care and serve as support for clinical decision-making. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out, with the application of an online questionnaire to Dentists. A request for an opinion was made to the Ethics Committee of Fernando Pessoa University and no sensitive data was collected. The study sample consisted of 312 Dentists, of which 264 were of Portuguese nationality, 18 of Italian nationality, 16 of Spanish nationality and 14 of French nationality. In relation the level of knowledge, professionals have partial knowledge regarding modifiable risk factors and signs and symptoms of Periodontal Disease and do not have sufficient knowledge regarding non-modifiable risk factors, although the majority self-assess as having solid and structured knowledge of the disease. Most of the participants, in the clinical experience, treated at least one patient undergoing oncological treatment, who were mainly undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy and manifestations such as xerostomia, taste alteration and mucositis were observed. The most common types of tumors are breast and lung cancer. It is concluded that dentists need to acquire greater knowledge of PD and its parameters in order to improve clinical practice and that there is a need for greater personalized and individualized medical-dental monitoring during the period of oncological treatment.
