Abstract(s)
Domestic violence is a crime of a huge scale, not only in Portugal but also internationally. It is a crime that deserves society’s attention, not only because of its scale but also because of its severity. However, in the literature, there is a lack of information on men who are victims of this crime, especially when compared to the studies that exist on women victims of domestic violence. This is reflected in the social perception of domestic violence, particularly among the security forces, who often have biased perceptions when dealing with these victims. With this knowledge in mind, this graduation project aims to find out about the biased perceptions that the security forces have concerning this issue. The first part of this project, the theoretical framework, aims to contextualize the issue of domestic violence in Portugal and internationally, focusing mainly on male victims and the studies carried out on their experiences with the security forces. The second part of this project presents a research proposal consisting of semi-structured interviews with male victims of domestic violence, to determine what experiences they had when they asked for help, or why they did not ask for help. With this research proposal, we can expect the results to be similar to those found in studies carried out on this subject internationally, i.e., that there is a tendency for the experiences reported by these victims to be negative when it comes to their treatment by the security forces.
