Num país que recorrentemente se encontrou em momentos
de escassez económica e agitação social, quais foram
as opções arquitetónicas que deram voz a essa situação
existencial? São as épocas críticas inerentemente propiciadoras
de sobriedade, conservadorismo e tibieza técnica? De
posturas nacionalistas ou internacionalistas?
A história da arquitetura portuguesa demonstra-nos que
existirão lógicas de reação, que talvez haja regularidades,
mas dificilmente condenações deterministas.
In a country often plagued by economical shortage and social unrest, what were the architectural choices that voiced such existential situations? Are critical periods inherently enablers of sobriety, conservatism and lack of technical ambition? Do they bring forth nationalistic or internationalist postures? The history of Portuguese architecture clearly shows that there might be some logical paths of reaction, even some regularities, but hardly a deterministic single fate.
