Abstract(s)
It is known that several oral diseases can directly compromise the health of the body as a whole, however, bacterial endocarditis (EB) seems to be a topic of great importance when related to invasive procedures of the oral cavity with certain systemic conditions. EB is a serious and potentially fatal infection and is mainly related to Gram-positive coccus bacteria, however many other microorganisms may also be involved with the onset of the disease, bringing to light the relevance of the microbiological understanding of EB. Even though the etiology of EB is complex, bacteria in the oral cavity are in fact present in the onset of the disease and, therefore, conducts to combat these bacteria, such as antibiotic prophylaxis, are included in international prevention protocols of the disease. Due to the importance of the topic for the dentistry community, this work consists of a bibliographic review with the main objective of evaluating the influence of bacteria in the oral cavity in the development of bacterial endocarditis.
