This research project aims to understand how biopsychosocial factors influence the formation of individual opinions regarding the death penalty and life imprisonment. Based on Engel's (1977) biopsychosocial model, the study seeks to analyse the influence of biological, psychological, and social factors on the construction of judgments about extreme forms of punishment. To achieve this objective, the theoretical contributions of authors such as António Damásio, Joshua Greene, Stanley Cohen, Michel Foucault, and David Garland were explored, highlighting the role of emotions, moral judgment processes, sociocultural influences, and social representations of crime in shaping attitudes towards punishment. Methodologically, the project proposes a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. It is expected that the research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing individuals' perceptions of the death penalty and life imprisonment, reinforcing the importance of a multidimensional approach to the analysis of this phenomenon.
