Abstract(s)
Context: Aging can be understood as a set of structural and functional changes harmful to the human organism that accumulate in a progressive way. Less is known about the efectiveness of hydrotherapy on the maintenance or gain of balance in elderly people. Therefore, there was the need to conduct this study in order to assess its importance. Objectives: the goal consisted in assessing the influence of hydrotherapy in the maintenance or gain of balance in elderly people. Methodology: to conduct this bibliographical revision, the gathering of information was made in the data base of PEDro, PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect and EBSCO (Sport Discuss and Cinhal). After selection according to criteria, the final sample in analysis was focused in 10 articles, each one of them observational, in which was applied the “Critical Appraisal Skills Programme” scale to classify them. Results: the proposed water and ground therapy programmes seem to be effective to promote the increase of balance in elderly people, however, these results were more evident in groups where hydrotherapy was applied. Conclusion: Hydrotherapy seems to be an effective resource for physiotherapy in what concerns the gain of balance by elderly people.
