Abstract(s)
In Dental Medicine, the prescription of antibiotics is usually done empirically and depends on the experience of the medical practitioner. It becomes essential that the dentists are capable of evaluating the clinical condition of the patients and use antibiotics only when it is necessary. Up-to-date knowledge about antibiotics is a very important tool, as well as knowledge of microorganisms present in oral infections, allowing a correct choice of the medicine preventing the increase of bacterial resistance, which represents a serious global health problem. It is up to dentists to comply with existing guidelines and clinical best practices. New alternatives to antibiotics, particularly pre/probiotics, and phagotherapy, may be promising as alternatives to some clinical conditions. The main goals of this dissertation were the study of clinical situations in dentistry that require antibiotics, the antibiotics that are used and new alternatives, through a current bibliographic review of these topics.
