Os microrganismos desempenham um papel importante na patogênese das principais alterações pulpares e periapicais. O resultado do tratamento endodôntico de dentes contendo polpa necrosada e infectada depende do sucesso da desinfecção e do selamento adequado do sistema de canais radiculares. A ação mecânica associada à irrigação do canal radicular pode eliminar os microrganismos. No entanto, apesar dos recentes avanços nas técnicas e instrumentos de preparo, restos de dentina e microrganismos permanecem em várias áreas do canal radicular mesmo após a instrumentação. Isso se deve principalmente à complexidade da anatomia do sistema de canais radiculares. Portanto, o objetivo desta revisão de literatura foi perceber como pode a irrigação ultrassônica passiva (PUI) ser um complemento na desinfecção dos canais radiculares.

The outcome of endodontic treatment of teeth containing necrotic and infected pulp depends on the success of disinfection and adequate sealing of the root canal system. The mechanical action associated with root canal irrigation can eliminate microorganisms. However, despite recent advances in preparation techniques and instruments, remnants of dentin and microorganisms remain in many areas of the root canal even after instrumentation. This is mainly due to the complexity of the root canal system anatomy. Therefore, the objective of this literature review was to understand how passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) can be a complement in root canal disinfection.
