Abstract(s)
Aims: Describe the current evidence on the role of the adipocyte in inflammation in obese patients. Methodology: Articles describing the role of the adipocyte in inflammation in obese patients were searched. The PubMed database was used with the search terms: adipocyte, inflammation and obesity. 1204 articles were obtained, of which 30 articles were used. Results: Adipose tissue is a complex and dynamic tissue, capable of responding to various stimuli. In a situation of obesity, where there is a positive energy balance, the adipocyte responds to this stimulus and is able to behave like a cell of the immune system, characterized by the secretion of adipokines. The secretion of adipokines is responsible for modulating inflammation in adipose tissue in the pathology of obesity. Conclusions: Current scientific literature provides a greater understanding of the inflammatory processes related to obesity, with the adipocyte being a central and important piece in the regulation of these processes. Some immunological mechanisms are not yet fully understood, therefore, research in this area is necessary.
