A osteorradionecrose dos maxilares, é uma complicação severa das radiações ionizantes, utilizadas no tratamento dos cancros da região da cabeça e pescoço. Esta revisão bibliográfica, visa dar ênfase, aos principais efeitos colaterais da radioterapia na cavidade oral, de uma forma geral e da osteorradionecrose em particular. Serão discutidas as formas preventivas desta patologia bem como, os factores etiológicos que desencadeiam e levam ao seu progresso, o diagnóstico, factores de risco, associados ao desenvolvimento da mesma. Por outro lado, serão apresentados os planos de tratamento e as diligências, que o Médico Dentista deve ter em conta, em pacientes que manifestem esta patologia, bem como em doentes que vão ser subjugados a tratamentos radioterapêuticos na região de cabeça e pescoço. The osteoradionecrosis of the jaws is a severe complication of ionizing radiation used in the treatment of cancers of the head and neck region. This literature review aims to give emphasis to the main side effects of radiotherapy in the oral cavity, in general and in particular osteoradionecrosis. Preventive forms will be discussed this pathology as well, the etiological factors that trigger lead to your progress, diagnosis and risk factors, associated with the development of the same. On the other hand, treatment plans and steps will be presented, the dentist should take into account, in patients who show this pathology, as well as in patients who will be subjugated to radiotherapeutic treatments in the head and neck.
