Abstract(s)
De acordo com a Organização Mundial de Saúde tem-se verificado um aumento significativo do número de pacientes com depressão. Esta é uma doença de origem multifatorial à qual estão associados fatores genéticos, psicossociais e alterações bioquímicas. Na depressão coincidem uma série de fatores que favorecem o aparecimento de alterações na cavidade oral. Este trabalho investiga os efeitos da depressão na saúde oral e os cuidados que o médico dentista deverá ter no tratamento destes pacientes. Entre as manifestações orais associadas à depressão e aos medicamentos antidepressores são destacadas, neste trabalho, a xerostomia, a cárie dentária, as doenças periodontais, o bruxismo, a estomatite aftosa recorrente e a síndrome da boca ardente. Por fim, é também enfatizada a importância da comunicação entre profissionais de saúde mental e dentistas, de forma a serem evitadas complicações e ser estabelecido um plano de tratamento adequado.

Depression is a multifactorial disease with associated genetic and psychosocial factors and biochemical changes. Depression is associated with a number of factors that favour the appearance of changes in the oral cavity. This study investigates the effects of depression on oral health and the care that the dentist should take in the treatment of these patients. Among the oral manifestations associated with depression and antidepressant drugs, xerostomia, dental caries, periodontal diseases, bruxism, recurrent aphthous stomatitis and burning mouth syndrome are highlighted in this work. Finally, the importance of communication between mental health professionals and dentists is also emphasized in order to avoid complications and establish an adequate treatment plan.
