Atualmente, a Diabetes Mellitus é referida como epidemia dado o seu crescimento na sociedade, tendo sido apontada como a sua sexta complicação mais comum a Periodontite Crónica, uma das doenças infeciosas mais comuns, com grande prevalência em Portugal.
Neste sentido, diversos estudos têm apontado para uma possível relação bidirecional entre a Periodontite Crónica e a Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2, referindo esta condição periodontal como tendo a capacidade de agravar o controlo glicémico. Por outro lado, a Diabetes Mellitus tem sido indicada como fator de risco para a periodontite. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a eficácia do tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico sobre o controlo glicémico em pacientes com ambas as doenças.
A revisão da literatura teve como base uma pesquisa bibliográfica de artigos disponíveis nas bases de dados eletrónicas Pub-Med e B-on. Foram incluídos artigos que relacionassem Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 com tratamento de Periodontite Crónica.
Currently, Diabetes Mellitus is referred as an epidemy due to its growth in society. It has been identified as the 6th most common complication of Chronic Periodontitis, one of the most common infectious diseases, with a high prevalence in Portugal. In this sense, several studies have pointed to a possible bidirectional relationship between Chronic Periodontitis and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, referring this periodontal condition as having the ability to aggravate glycemic control. On the other hand, Diabetes Mellitus has been indicated as a risk factor for periodontitis. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of non-surgical periodontal treatment on glycemic control in patients with both diseases. The literature review was based on a bibliographic research of articles available in the electronic databases Pub-Med and B-on. Were included articles that related type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with the treatment of Chronic Periodontitis.
