Abstract(s)
Objetivo: Abordar a sucção não nutritiva em geral, focando as suas repercussões na cavidade oral e das possíveis estratégias terapêuticas, nomeadamente dispositivos intraorais.
Metodologia: Para a elaboração desta revisão bibliográfica, foi efetuada uma pesquisa de artigos publicados nas bases de dados eletrónicas: PubMed, Scielo e Web of Science, entre dezembro e maio de 2023. Foi realizada a pesquisa com os termos Mesh: "sucking behaviors"; "finger sucking"; “thumb sucking"; "pacifier"; “malocclusion” e “pediatric dentistry” articulados entre si com o marcador booleano AND ou OR. Após leitura dos artigos foram selecionados 68 para a execução deste trabalho.
Tópico abordado: A criança desenvolve, durante o seu crescimento, diferentes formas de sucção, as quais desempenham um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento da função oral e da morfologia orofacial. A sucção não nutritiva corresponde à sucção digital e à sucção da chupeta. Estas formas de sucção, se não removidas precocemente, podem ter repercussões sobre o bom desenvolvimento da cavidade oral, tanto ao nível dento-alveolar como ao nível do desenvolvimento orofacial. É importante saber quando e como interromper estes hábitos parafuncionais, e também conhecer as diferentes estratégias terapêuticas que podem ser psicológicas, físicas, com ou sem dispositivos intraorais.
Objective: To approach non-nutritive sucking in general, focusing about its repercussion in the oral cavity and the therapeutic strategies, namely intraoral devices. Methodology: For the elaboration of this bibliographic review, a search of articles published in the electronic databases was performed: PubMed, Scielo and Web of Science, between December and May 2023. The search was carried out with the following Mesh terms: "sucking behaviors"; "finger sucking"; "thumb sucking"; "pacifier"; "malocclusion" and "pediatric dentistry" articulated with the Boolean marker AND e OR. After reading the articles, 68 were selected for this study. Topic addressed: During growth, the child develops different forms of sucking, which play a key role in the development of oral function and orofacial morphology. Non-nutritive sucking corresponds to digital sucking and pacifier sucking. These forms of sucking, if not removed early, may have repercussions on the proper development of the oral cavity, at the dento alveolar level and at the level of orofacial development. It is important to know when and how to stop these parafunctional habits, and also to know the different therapeutic strategies that can be psychological, physical, with or without intraoral devices.
