Abstract(s)
Fatores de risco incluem stress (OR=1,253) e comportamentos orais (OR=1,197).
Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a group of disorders involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the masticatory muscles, causing pain and functional limitations. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of TMD symptoms among string instrument musicians in Italy and Portugal. Specific objectives include identifying risk factors associated with TMD, comparing data with previous studies, and analyzing differences between professional and amateur musicians. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using an anonymous digitally distributed questionnaire. The study population included violin and viola musicians over the age of 18, residing in Italy and Portugal. The collected data were statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software, through statistical descriptions, chi-square tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests. 19.2% of string instrument musicians reported jaw pain, 42.5% reported neck/shoulder pain, and 37.0% reported headaches. Pain worsens with musical practice in 46.7% of cases. Risk factors include stress (OR=1.253) and oral behaviors (OR=1.197). The results obtained, although showing a relevant discrepancy in the prevalence of TMD between the sample of this study and the articles with which it was compared, underline that string musicians are a population at risk regarding the onset or development of TMD, with an interesting relationship between the prevalence of symptoms and the level of practice of the musician. This highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of TMD in string instrument musicians to improve their quality of life and performance. Further research is needed to develop specific interventions and effective prevention strategies.
