Abstract(s)
Objective: to evaluate the potential of hyaluronic acid as a coadjuvant to the non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: A search was performed on the MEDLINE / PubMed database. Only randomized human trials published in the last 10 years in English, Portuguese or Italian were included. We selected 7 articles. Results: Despite the scarce number of articles with high heterogeneity, the literature suggests that hyaluronic acid, as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of chronic periodontitis, seems to be more effective than isolated non-surgical treatment modalities. Conclusions: More adequately standardized studies are needed to confirm and clarify the results, to investigate the mode of action of hyaluronic acid and to define with a high degree of confidence its long-term coadjuvant effect in the non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis.
