Abstract(s)
Obesity is a current Public Health problem, so the interest in finding effective solutions for both patients and their caregivers, and health professionals is increasing. The impact of obesity on the individual is felt in terms of quality of life, in the use of health services, in school and professional absenteeism, and in the limitation of daily activities. The increase in the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents, although associated with genetic factors, is partly explained by the influence of environmental and behavioral factors, such as life-style factors. In order to improve the understanding of this disease, the characterization of its genetic basis was started in the 1950s. With the discovery of the influence of the product of specific genes, alone or in combination with other proteins, the knowledge about the causes, pathophysiological mechanisms, and therapeutic and preventive strategies of obesity was significantly improved. Considering the scope of the theme, the present work specifically explores the influence of a specific protein on obesity, the leptin. Being a central theme of Public Health that involves knowledge with some level of complexity, the permanent updating of technical and scientific information by health professionals, namely pharmacists, will be fundamental for the counseling activity of patients and their families.
