Abstract(s)
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of myofunctional therapy in correcting masticatory and perioral muscle disorders in pediatric patients with malocclusions and myofunctional dysfunctions. A systematic literature search was carried out in the Pubmed, central Pubmed and B-ON databases. The PICO method was followed as a research strategy. A total of 583 articles were found, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 6 studies were considered with eligibility criteria for the review. In total, 204 patients were evaluated with myofunctional treatment that consisted of daily exercises and use of appliances (Pre-Orthodontic Educator, removable appliances and froggy mouth). Myofunctional therapy consists of acting on the masticatory and perioral muscles and correcting the position of the lips and tongue, giving children good practices. Allowing to induce stomatognathic stability, the reestablishment of a good occlusion and the treatment of disorders in swallowing and phonation.
