Abstract(s)
Considered the latest innovation, charcoal, also known as "black magic", has been used by the health and cosmetic industry. Due to its wide dissemination through the media and influencers, this "black magic" is known, in dentistry, as a whitening product without the help of health professionals. This review aims to show the effects of activated charcoal toothpastes regarding abrasiveness, whitening effect and fluoride, as well as the harms and benefits of its use. To this end, a narrative review of the literature was carried out based on articles published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese in the last six years, and some references outside this time frame were also used, resulting in 34 bibliographic references. For the above mentioned, it is possible to verify that the subject is controversial, so further studies are imperative, and it is also necessary to sensitize dentists so that they alert their patients of the contraindications of these toothpastes.
