Abstract(s)
O cancro na região de cabeça e pescoço pode afetar estruturas da cavidade oral assim como da orofaringe. A radioterapia é uma das principais modalidades terapêuticas usadas para o tratamento do cancro e pode ser realizada isoladamente ou em conjunto com a cirurgia e quimioterapia. Apesar da sua eficácia, a radioterapia promove alguns efeitos adversos e, consequentemente, impacto na saúde oral e qualidade de vida do paciente. As principais complicações da radioterapia na região da cabeça e pescoço são: mucosite, xerostomia, cárie de radiação, infeções secundárias, osteorradionecrose e trismo. O presente estudo, baseado numa revisão de literatura, tem como objetivo destacar e analisar essas complicações bem como prevenir e minimizar os seus efeitos. Para o tratamento oncológico é necessária uma equipa médica multidisciplinar para atuar em harmonia e extrema atenção nesse contexto, no qual o médico dentista desempenha uma importante função no diagnóstico, prevenção e controlo dessas complicações, de modo a oferecer aos pacientes uma melhor expectativa de vida.
The cancer in the head and neck region might affect oral cavity and oropharynx structures. The radiotherapy is one of the main therapeutic modality used for treatment of cancer, which can be applied separated or together with the surgery and chemotherapy. Although this treatment has a good efficiency, the radiotherapy promotes some adverse effects that negatively impact the oral health and quality life of the patients. The main complications of radiotherapy in the head and neck region are: mucositis, xerostomia, radiation caries, secondary infections, osteoradionecrosis and trismus. This study is based on literature reviews and aims highlight and analyze these complications and how to prevent and minimize the negative effects. For the cancer treatment is required a multidisciplinary medical group to act with harmony and extreme attention on the context, which the dentist performs an important function on the diagnosis, prevention and control of those complications, in sense of providing a better life expectation to the patients.
