Abstract(s)
Due to the increased survival of transplanted patients, through the use of immunosuppressive medications, the search for dental treatments allowing a better life quality is a reality. The use of dental implants is an option to improve the aesthetic component, oral function and restore patient’s self-esteem. There is still no consensus among dentists about the use of dental implants when it comes to transplanted patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. Indeed, such therapy acts on the immune system, namely on cells of the adaptive response, so that there is no rejection of the transplanted organ. Thus, the patient is more prone to infections, as well as to decreased bone and tissue healing. These patients represent a group with a higher risk of complications and failures in the treatment with implants and procedures that involve surgery. Greater knowledge is required so dentists can assist these patients, with greater attention to pre-surgical and post-surgical care, to optimize the treatment performed. Despite the apparent success, there is a dearth of long-term studies that evaluate the success of implant placement in transplanted patients.
