Introduction: virtual reality has been used in physiotherapy to rehabilitate patients with different conditions, but it’s the effects on muscle strength of older adults has not been summarized yet. Aim: To summarize the scientific evidence on the effect of applying intervention programs based on virtual reality technologies on muscle strength in the elderly. Methodology: A search was carried out in the Pubmed, Web of Science and EBSCOhost databases to identify randomized controlled studies evaluating the effect of virtual reality interventions on muscle strength in the elderly. The methodological quality was analyzed using the PEDro scale. Results: 6 studies were included involving 265 participants (21% men), with an average age of 76 years and an average methodological quality of 5.5/10. The regular practice of physical exercise using virtual reality improved muscle strength of elderly people levels in 3 included studies. Conclusion: physical exercise protocols based on virtual reality seem to have the potential to increase muscle strength in the elderly, but further studies are needed to confirm their effect.
