Abstract(s)
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find, inside of Estabelecimento Prisional do Porto, the value that this community (offenders and dentist) give to oral health. In this way, one of the objectives was to understand prisoners' health conditions, give a treatment plan and sensibilize for a bigger education and preoccupation with oral health. Methods: Group of volunteers between 20 and 40 year-old, who had entered in prison between 2015 and 2019. The participants in this study completed an evaluation questionnaire to understand the main problems and which habits most affected their oral health and underwent a clinical examination guided using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System. The Department of Dentistry was also surveyed with a specific questionnaire. Results: Only 5% of the participants revealed to have total absence of cavities, 20% of the sample revealed to have an oral health in obvious decay and 75% of the inquired use the dental service, but more than half of them only do it in case of pain. According to the present investigation, the two factors that most seem to influence oral health are age and oral hygiene habits. About 92% of the volunteers see in dentistry the means to enhance their self-esteem. Conclusion: With the present investigation it became clear that today dentistry is considered a determining factor for the inmate and for his reintegration into the environment in freedom. Although factors such as the illicit substances used and the visit to the dentist are not relevant in the inmate's oral health, this should be evaluated in view of the dynamics of these places. Oral hygiene and patient age influence their oral health. Currently, the prison environment is not used as a place of education for oral health, and this should be a present objective as well as a place of interception of patients at risk.
