Encarando The William Blake Archive como um formato capaz de representar de forma mais adequada a materialidade e a historicidade da obra intercanónica de William Blake do que a edição impressa, este artigo pretende demonstrar as suas virtualidades e constrangimentos do ponto de vista da representação e leitura dessa obra. Para tal, passam-se em revista os princípios editoriais subjacentes, a construção do formato e o público a que se destina, bem como questões editoriais específicas da edição electrónica.
By considering The William Blake Archive to be a more suitable way of displaying the materiality and historicity of William Blake’s illuminated books than their print edition, this article article discusses how the ability of this digital archive to retrieve, simulate and display different types of documents in a metatextual critical environment is changing the way scholars read, examine and study the work of William Blake. In the process, editorial principles of the Archive, graphic user interface, hypertext structure, image encoding and textual markup are analysed as part of that editorial simulation.
