Abstract(s)
The objective of this thesis is to analyze how many dental traumas occur during the practice of football, tennis and combat sports (at the sports clubs ASD Caprino, ASD US Baldense, Asd consolini Calcio, ASD Tennis Caprino and Maraia Top Team) and whether it is possible to prevent them using various types of mouthguards and also to evaluate the opinion that athletes have about these prevention tools. This study is a cross-sectional observational epidemiological study. 181 athletes were included, of both sexes, with an average age of 36.14 years, of which 32.6% were tennis players, 33.1% football and 34.3% combat sports. Regarding data collection materials and methods, an online questionnaire was used, with questions about individual characteristics, dental trauma in sports history and the use of mouthguards. It was observed that 43.1% of athletes suffered dental trauma during sports. The most common dental trauma was fracture (26%) and the cause of the trauma presented is due to impacts with another opponent (29.3%). Of the sample, 50.3% use a mouthguard to prevent trauma, with custom-made mouthguards being the most used protector. In conclusion, we can say that a high number of athletes from different sports have suffered dental trauma during sports and many, after suffering trauma, prefer to use a mouthguard to protect themselves from future trauma. However, other athletes are still unaware of the prevention of dental trauma.
