Abstract(s)
Objective: To verify the effectiveness of physical therapy in elderly women with urinary incontinence (UI). Methodology: This literature review was conducted in three computerized databases Pubmed, Web of Science and PEDro, conducted between April and May 2023, with the combination of the keywords elderly, urinary incontinence, physical therapy modalities, women, pelvic floor, according to the PRISMA guidelines. Methodological quality was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale (PEDro). Results: Seven articles were eligible for inclusion, scoring 6/10 on the PEDro scale and included 601 participants over the age of 60 years. There was significant improvement in UI symptoms after the proposed treatment in all selected studies, namely in terms of involuntary urine loss and quality of life. Conclusion: Scientific evidence suggests that physiotherapy, namely pelvic floor muscle training alone or combined with other types of training, as well as the educational component and self-management, seem to be relevant interventions in elderly women with UI.
