Abstract(s)
The present study sought to assess the quality of life (QoL) of health assistants in Portugal and, simultaneously, to explore the relationship between QoL and the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample. This is a cross-sectional, correlational and quantitative study. The sample consists of 348 health assistants (14 males and 334 females), with an average age of 36.36 years (SD = 11.48); 18-58). For the collection of information, a Sociodemographic Questionnaire designed for this purpose and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument, short version (WHOQOL-Bref), made available online were used. The results obtained reveal that the QoL of health assistants in Portugal is affected by overcrowded services, by overwork, which can lead to exhaustion, exhaustion, burnout. Then, in the specific case of the sample, the sociodemographic and inherent aspects of the profession are related to QoL. Specifically, age, levels of concern about unemployment, difficulties falling asleep, workload and physical exhaustion are related to QoL: the lower the better the QoL. On the other hand, the better the economic situation and the higher the level of education, the better the QoL. Finally, in this study, QoL is better in males than in females and the activity sector is related to QoL, with higher QoL values in the Orthopedics sector. Given the current times, due to the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19), it was found that there are several factors that can contribute to a lower QoL of health assistants, as they demonstrate several concerns, such as not having enough knowledge about COVID-19; accompany a patient with COVID-19; take appropriate precautions to prevent transmission of COVID-19; and being afraid of infecting family and friends. It is concluded that aspects inherent to the profession exercised by health assistants can interfere in their QoL, and the overwhelming majority of the sample reveals that they are not treated fairly in their workplace, which can contribute to a lower QoL.
