Abstract(s)
Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia is characterized by lower respiratory tract infection, acquired in a hospital setting, with a high prevalence rate in Portugal. Oral microbial colonization and periodontal disease may influence the progression of this infection as it results from aspiration of the oropharynx flora. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between nosocomial pneumonia and periodontal disease, focusing particularly on the possible effect of periodontal treatment on the control of nosocomial infection in hospitalized patients. Materials and Methods: A bibliographic research using the Pubmed database was conducted and randomized clinical trials published between 2010 and 2020 in English and Portuguese were included. Results/Conclusions: After the literature analysis it can be concluded that periodontal treatment has a beneficial effect on the control of nosocomial pneumonia, particularly in mechanically ventilated patients. However, more studies, with minimal bias, are needed for an effective implementation of guidelines.
