Abstract(s)
This work is a study of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Oliveira de Azerneis. This is a party that has been characterized locally by a high number of victories, especially in local elections, in which the PSD is the only party to have won since the first election in 1976. To understand the national context, the work begins with an explanation of the transition to representative democracy in Portugal and on the general characteristics of central and local government. Secondly, the political parties' types were analyzed as indicated in the political science literature. Next, the profile of the Portuguese parties in the national political spectrum was studied and data was sought to obtain a characterization of its electoral roll. We then proceeded to a more detailed study of the Social Democratic Party, in its history, organics and programmatic lines. The study of the party in the County below was conducted then, based on the analysis of documents and data from interviews with local party "elites". The local structure and its relationship with the district and national levels of the party was then characterized. 1 was also sought to understand how the party stands in its relationship with the local authority, as it is a long time ruling party. From the set, emerges the image of a party with strong local roots that capitalizes on the national structure. Of the Social Democratic Party as a whole, results the image of a government party, whose strategy is based on a large voter mobilization, phenomena that matches the typologies of contemporary political parties.
