The role of dentistry in palliative care: a narrative review

| dc.description.abstract | Palliative care is understood as those treatments aiming to improve the quality of life for patients, as well as for their families, tackling the problems associated with life-threatening diseases by preventing, reducing or relieving the suffering, through early diagnosis of pain and the physical, psychological, social and spiritual issues that such diseases can cause. A multi-professional approach is instrumental and the role of the dentist is to act on the orofacial pain relief, prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections, control of oral bleeding, readaptation and repair of oral protheses, prevention and alleviation of radiotherapy and chemotherapy effects, control of the salivary changes, among others. This narrative review aims to address the importance of palliative dental care in terminally ill patients. The conclusion is that this subject has not been discussed enough, translating to what clinic reality is at the moment. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Entendem-se como cuidados paliativos aqueles que visam melhorar a qualidade de vida dos doentes e também das respetivas famílias, abordando os problemas associados às doenças que ameaçam a vida, prevenindo, diminuindo e /ou aliviando o sofrimento, através do diagnóstico precoce da dor, de problemas físicos, psicológicos, sociais e espirituais que tais doenças podem causar. O foco multiprofissional é fundamental e o papel do Médico Dentista é atuar no alívio da dor orofacial, na prevenção e tratamento de infeções oportunistas, no controle de hemorragias orais, na readaptação e conserto de próteses dentárias, na prevenção e alívio dos efeitos da radioterapia e quimioterapia, no controle das alterações de saliva, entre outros. Essa revisão narrativa da literatura tem como objetivo abordar os cuidados orais paliativos em pacientes terminais. Conclui-se que o tema é pouco abordado na literatura, traduzindo o que é a realidade clínica para esta população. | pt_PT |
